Great elevator speeches have made millionaires out of many people. Your elevator speech tells clients and prospects why they should do business with you. It is a short, rehearsed introduction used to build your business.

Most business owners and sales people have weak, nondescript, boring and unappealing elevator speeches. They offer no benefits, they offer no great value or any true uniqueness. Your elevator speech is intertwined with your USP, or Unique Selling Proposition. Imagine there is a customer or prospect in front of you right now and you want their business. When you have a clear answer that differentiates you from your competition, you have your USP. You will take the USP and refine it down and make it so compelling that the people you say it to will say, "Whoa! Tell me more!" The most common mistake is to make your speech about yourself. It must be about what you do for others. As humans we are mostly concerned about ourselves and are living dazed in our own world. To avoid this mistake, look at both your USP and your elevator speech. Every place you have the words we, me or I, try to replace them with the words you or yours.

Another major mistake is to make your USP and elevator speech just a catchy phrase that really doesn't mean anything. Something like "We're first in banking." or "We've got the best service." or "We have a great selection." They are boring and say nothing about what you do for your customers.

Your elevator speech can either bring you customers or send them away. Take your time and do it right. Run it by your customers and friends for their feedback. Refine it and rehearse it. Videotape yourself and critique your performance. It can be a big factor in your success.
